History of Dover Baptist Church
Dover Baptist Church, first called Central Street Freewill Baptist Church, organized in February 1840, when 13 dissident from the first Freewill Baptist church met. Until the Civil War, the church was stridently anti-slavery. Its first building was on Washington Street across from Locust Street. Its present building was built in 1868 and rebuilt in 1883 after a devastating fire. Central Avenue Baptists united with Dover Baptist in 1918.
Twenty-three men have served as pastor.
